An influencer is “mixing” with a restaurant – and people are debating what it is RICE things to do.
Jake Shane shared an exchange he had with Sugarfish, a restaurant from the Sushi Nozawa Group, in which they said the white rice sides are only for kids.
The 24-year-old influencer and podcast host apparently tried unsuccessfully to order a side of white rice while dining at Sugarfish, and on Monday, he took to his Instagram stories to share that he was “getting reports ” from people that the delicious, omakase-only sushi bar actually serves rice portions to “select customers.”
He tagged the restaurant in his story, and Sugarfish responded to clarify their stance, which Shane shared in a full Instagram post.
“Hi Jake, We allow side orders of children’s rice (dinner only) because some aren’t eating sushi yet and we think feeding hungry kids is a good thing for everyone’s dining experience,” they wrote in answer. “We look forward to seeing you soon!”
Shane responded to the odd response, “Fk a po beefing,” to which the response was, “Never.”
After saying he was “feeling really hard” about the showdown, Shane asked if they could give him a piece of rice “just once” and even offered to write them one of his infamous poems in return.
“I really don’t know how to emphasize how important this is to me,” he admitted.
Sugarfish decided to get in on the joke and used Shane’s own poetic skills.
“Roses are red, violets are blue, rice SUGAR is only for children, not for you,” they cleverly replied.
A “speechless” Shane wrote back: “Give me the rice please hand me any special spices? Your face is anything but poker.”
“DO NOT THINK. JUST EAT. TRUST ME,” they replied, referring to a menu item that included a sashimi course, seven orders of nigiri and two hand rolls.
The exchange sparked debate online, though most people in the comments were supportive of Shane.
“Bringing hungry children into the debate is crazy,” said one.
“Damn they really want to die on this hill ah,” wrote another.
“This is lowbrow cruelty from them,” one user commented.
“No pc is literally RICE,” said one shocked fan.
“Not much rice from them,” exclaimed the Fabletics Instagram.
“Start bringing a kid to Sugarfish,” one person suggested, while another shared, “I lied and said I was 12.”
Another angry customer wrote in all caps: “I’ve been waiting years for the media to cover this. Enough is enough. Give me rice and miso soup over the age of 9.”
The Post has contacted Shane and Sugarfish for comment.
However, on Sugarfish’s FAQ page, they answer the question, “Why can’t I order a bowl of rice when you let the kids do it?”
In addition to the same answer they gave Shane about hungry kids, they noted that they make their rice into “very small clumps” and make a fresh batch “at least every 30 minutes, discarding any unused rice from the previous batch”.
“If we allow all guests to order extra rice, it will slow down our kitchen and cause other guests to have to wait for their food.”
The debate even reached the Today Show, where Jenna Bush Hager and Donna Farizan debated whether people should be able to order off the kids’ menu.
“He wants rice, you know?” Jenna Bush Hager said. “I think we should give the man some rice. It’s not like he’s asking for the salmon on the kids’ menu for a cheaper price. He just wants rice plus sushi.”
